Lethbridge College launches new dual credit courses for area high school students

By Lethbridge Herald on May 13, 2021.

High school students can now get a head start on their post-secondary journey thanks to Lethbridge College’s new dual credit courses.
Beginning in the fall, students from seven area school divisions can enrol in one of six college-level classes, earning credit at both their high school and at Lethbridge College while exploring the college’s innovative programs and exciting career possibilities.
“I think the value of dual credit is that it allows high school students an opportunity to try something that they can’t do at their school, and build some experience at the post-secondary level that would allow them to continue in the future,” said Dr. Terry Kowalchuk, Dean of the Centre for Technology, Environment and Design in a press release. “It creates possibilities for students.”
Participating school divisions include Palliser School Division, Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, Prairie Rose School Division, Westwind School Division, Medicine Hat Public School Division, Livingstone Range School Division and Horizon School Division.
Lethbridge College has offered a handful of dual credit courses in previous years and is building on that initial success to offer a wider variety to students at even more of the region’s high schools. Leaders at the school divisions welcome the additional opportunities for their students.
“We are really excited for our students to have these dual credit offerings available from Lethbridge College,” said Jason Kupery, Director of Learning for Palliser Regional Schools. “These courses will offer high school students across southern Alberta the opportunity to discover exciting new educational experiences. Our hope is that these courses will spark a passion and assist in the transition to post-secondary studies.”
The dual credit courses for the college’s fall 2021 season include Design Fundamentals, in which students learn the basic elements and principles of design and explore the human-built environment using two- and three-dimensional problem-solving techniques as well as Introduction to Design Software and Photography, offering a hands-on experience using the latest design software and DSLR camera functions, developing skills needed to create the still visuals used in media.
Marketing Fundamentals for Media will teach the students to identify communication opportunities, choose target audiences, and use social media, news media and advertising platforms to implement campaigns, while Animal Science will give the students a wider perspective on the animals under production in southern Alberta and focus on physiology, nutrition, reproduction, current environmental and welfare issues and more.
Also offered is Graphic Communications, teaching the tools and techniques needed using AutoCAD to create industry-ready engineering drawings, including 3D modelling and advanced applications and customization techniques.
In Commodity Marketing, students will discover the ins and outs of marketing agricultural commodities, including the role of futures markets, the mechanics of futures trading, the use of futures market to hedge and more.
Students can enrol through their high schools and should contact their high school guidance counselor for registration details.
