Lethbridge’s public transit union is endorsing Rachel Notley and the NDP to form the next government of Alberta.
The Amalgamated Transit Union Canada Local 987 in Lethbridge says no government has done more to support public transit than Premier Notley, and no other provincial party in this current election has as extensive a commitment to public transit as the NDP.
“The United Conservative Party does not care about public transit in any meaningful way. We’ve moved ahead so far in the last four years that we cannot afford to move backwards,” warned Travis Oberg, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 987, which represents transit workers in Lethbridge. “The UCP’s austerity agenda will throw every improvement we’ve made to public transit in Lethbridge out the window.”
The union cites the NDP’s investment in transit infrastructure the past four years as the reasons for its endorsement, including its $10-million investment in the downtown Park N’ Ride Terminal and its investments in the electrification of the Lethbridge city fleet.
