CALGARY – The Crown says a Calgary man convicted in the beating death of his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter should serve 15 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole.
Ivy Wick died in hospital of head and brain injuries in 2017.
An autopsy determined she had suffered blunt force trauma.
A trial heard Justin Bennett told undercover police officers that he snapped when the child interrupted him, and then smashed her head, threw her against a wall and tripped her.
Bennett was convicted in 2021 of second-degree murder, and a sentencing hearing was delayed as he fired several lawyers and failed in a bid to have a mistrial.
Bennett receives an automatic life sentence for the murder conviction, and a judge must determine when he can apply for parole.
