EDMONTON – Police say the suspect in a fatal double stabbing outside an Edmonton school has a history of mental health issues and has been charged multiple times with assaulting minors over the last decade.

Police chief Dale McFee says the suspect has been in and out of jail on various charges, including randomly assaulting a 12-year-old child at a transit station last year.

Officers were called to the Crawford Plains School in the city’s southeast Friday evening and found a woman and child had been stabbed.

Family members have identified the victims as Carolann Robillard and Sarah Miller, who had started using the first name Jayden.

Police allege the suspect attempted to enter the school, but was prevented from doing so before randomly attacking the two victims.

Police shot the man during an altercation shortly after they found the victims and he is on life support in hospital.
