Police agencies across the country, including the Medicine Hat Police Service, will participate in a public education campaign throughout March to prevent fraud and recognize scams.

Members of the MHPS Community Support Unit will share information and practical tips to help residents recognize common frauds and scams and learn how to protect themselves during the 22nd annual Fraud Prevention Month in Canada.

“Fraudsters use many tactics, and these schemes continue to evolve and become increasingly sophisticated,” reads a public statement issued Monday. “The most effective way to avoid being a victim is to stay informed, remain cautious and be skeptical of offers or situations that seem too good to be true.”

Last year, Hatters lost more than $4 million to fraud-related scams through local and global fraud-related crimes, up from more than $2.2 million lost in 2024.

Throughout the month local police will share information via social media as well as links to helpful information published by Alberta Crime Prevention, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Better Business Bureau.

“As technologies continue to evolve, fraudsters are finding new ways to exploit people hoping to come to Canada,” said Lena Metlege Diab, federal minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship. “Our message is clear; we will continue to take strong actions to detect, deter and prevent immigration and citizenship fraud.”

In a release Sunday the government asks all Canadians to take three steps – stop, stop and report – to prevent frauds in action.

“Spot the warning signs… Stop before you act… Report fraud,” reads the release.
