A contract to expand mental health facilities for youth in Medicine Hat and other centres has been awarded, but the local construction won’t be completed until 2029.

Clark Builders announced Monday it has won bidding to build four centres around the province that will provide beds and day services as well as “wraparound services” to children and teens experiencing complex mental health challenges.

That includes four planned, 30,000 square-foot facilities in Fort McMurray and Calgary that could open in late 2027. Facilities that will be operated by CASA Mental Health under provincial grants in Edmonton and Medicine Hat are to be completed two years later, according to the release.

“Clark Builders is honoured and excited to continue the journey with CASA and expand mental health services to youth and children across Alberta,” read its release.

The construction contract is worth $110 million, including provincial support and a $12-million fundraising portion. The Alberta budget states that about 2,000 more children and teens will benefit from the overall funding from the province.

CASA already offers school outreach and programming in conjunction with Medicine Hat Public School Division at Southview Community School among 16 in the province, including eight added last fall.
