A 14-year-old girl was killed in a motor vehicle collision near Coaldale on Tuesday morning.

RCMP say they and other emergency personnel responded to the collision at the intersection of Township Road 102 and Range Road 221 in Lethbridge County at roughly 9:40 a.m.

Two vehicles were involved in the collision and the two male drivers were transported to hospital with as yet unknown injuries.

Sadly, a 14-year-old female passenger from Diamond City was declared deceased at the scene.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation continues. The highway was reopened for travel by the afternoon.

Scam claims elderly victim

Brooks RCMP say a local elderly woman was scammed out of $10,000 a month for the last year as they launched an investigation into a complaint made by the women’s daughter earlier this month.

Police say the victim was asked to send the money to a recipient overseas, and they are reminding people to discuss the dangers of fraud with their elderly friends and relatives.

Authorities say the use of computer dating and impersonating government or banking authorities are common tactics of fraudsters.

“Please note that no legitimate government entity requests payment via gift cards,” states a release. “If any business is requesting payment over the phone, it is important that we let seniors know to hang up and call the company back directly.”

Charges for squatter

Homeowners returning to their vacant property with their realtor on Sunday discovered a man living in the basement, according to the Brooks RCMP detachment.

Police were called to the residence that was listed for sale and arrested the male on a charge of breaking and entering. He will appear in court Nov. 6.

Rural rollover

RCMP say an iPhone notification program alerted them to a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 544 on Sept. 6. Police found a lone male inside a vehicle that lost control on a curve and rolled into the ditch about 10 kilometres east of Patricia. The individual was taken to hospital and issued a ticket for driving on a learner’s permit without proper supervision.

Job site pilfered

Thieves in Bassano made off with $30,000 worth of tools and equipment from an overnight break-in on Sept. 6 at house that was undergoing renovations. The investigation is ongoing.
