Applications for the Dunmore Equestrian Little Britches Rodeo Sweetheart competition closed on Friday, and all eyes look to next weekend to see who will take the crown for the coming year.

For Rodeo Sweetheart Sophie Cruthers and Rodeo Miss Jada Silcher, the upcoming competition is a bittersweet one, as while they’re thrilled for the girls who will work hard to earn their titles, they both feel they’ve had an incredible year and will miss the experience.

“Throughout the year, I spent time at seniors’ homes, doing pet visits, I spent lots of time in our Hometown Arena in Dunmore, riding in rodeos and helping out there,” said Silcher. “It’s been wonderful, and also incredibly busy.

Cruthers was pleased to share her pride in participating in her hometown’s parade in Shaunavon as part of her experience.

“We went to lots of indoor rodeos like CFR, which was a blast. Attending the fashion show was probably my favourite part,” said Cruthers.

On Aug. 23, the new contestants will start their run for the title with public speaking and modelling, which will begin at 5 p.m. at the Safety Buzz Campus. The following day will host the horsemanship competition and crowning at the Dunmore Equestrian Centre.

Both royals advise the contestants to go in with confidence, have fun, and try not to stress themselves out in the process of preparing.

They also expressed gratitude for the support of the community.

“We have some of the best sponsors that we’ve ever had, which we are just so excited about,” said Silcher. “I just wish all the girls the best of luck, and we hope to see everyone there!”
