Community Events: Library’s spring book sale heads list of upcoming things to do

The Friends of the Library book sale takes place on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 at the Medicine Hat Public Library.

Thousands of “gently used” books, DVDs, magazines, board games and other material will be available for purchase. The sale begins at 10 a.m both days and ends at 4 p.m. on the Friday and 3 p.m. on the Saturday. Proceeds support the library.

Gord Earl Barbecue

The annual Medicine Hat Police Service open house will be held June 1 at the Second Street police station and Chief Gord Earl Leadership legacy scholarships will be announced at a fundraising barbecue that day.

Building tours will take place at 11 a.m., 1 and 2 p.m. and scholarship presentations will take place at 12:30 p.m.

Displays of specialized tactical team, forensics and bylaw equipment will be featured, and attendees are welcome to meet two support dogs who work with victim’s services.

The event is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Quilt exhibition

The Cactus Rose Quilters Guild will showcase wares from its members and host vendors at an event June 7-8 weekend.

More than 300 pieces will be displayed at the Medicine Hat Curling Club from noon until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7 and then again from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. the following day.

Admission is $10 with proceeds going toward supplies for the “Comfort Quilts” program that provides about 100 quilts each year to local health-care and young-mother programs.

Refreshments will be on hand and raffles are planned.

Historic church mass, supper

The Blumenfeld (Sask.) & District Heritage society is planning a pilgrimage to the Blumenfeld Church and Shrine to Our lady of Sorrows near Prelate on June 9.

Reconciliation will begin at 2 p.m. that day, followed by Rosary and outdoor mass at 3 p.m. and then a supper.

All are welcome and asked to bring flower baskets, lawn chairs, umbrellas and bug spray.

Donations will be accepted to “refresh and landscape the cemetery” at the event or by mailing “Blumenfeld Heritage Site” C/O Box 104, Leader, Sask. S0N-1H0.

The church is open each Sunday in the summer from 2-4 p.m. from July 7 until Sept. 1.
