Police warn public about returning ‘grandparent scam’

Police say a scammer will typically call someone’s grandparent saying they are in trouble, returning from a foreign country or even in jail and need money transferred immediately. Many scammers proceed to tell the victim not to contact their mother or father to verify as they will get in trouble. Scammers are also known to pose as an old neighbour or friend of the family. Police say seniors and grandparents are typically the target of these phone scams. Police suggest requests for money over the phone should be verified to make sure the caller’s identify is legitimate.
