Natural gas rates in Medicine Hat will rise in November while power prices fall for customers with default commodity pricing, according to rates published Tuesday.

Local customers will pay $5.51 per gigajoule of gas used during the month, up 40 cents from October. Power will be charged at 17.34-cents per kilowatt hour this month, about a penny less than last month.

Ratepayers who signed on for fixed rates for either electricity or natural gas will pay 8 cents and $4.35, respectively. Default rates are set in Medicine Hat using the average of rates offered across the province.

Rate for power approved by the Alberta Utility Commission this month were 17.39-cents (Epcor, outside Edmonton) and 18.25-cents (Enmax). The two comparable gas rates were $5.37 from Apex Utilities and $5.64 from Direct Energy.

Trail work

A small section of the Saratoga Trail will be closed for repair work for the first two weeks of November, the city announced Tuesday.

The portion, across the Seven Persons Creek from Factory Street, connects the trail near South Railway Street to western section of the trail system. Replacing a culvert and repaving is meant to address ice buildup in winter months.

Road Work

Changes to make a dedicated right-hand turn lane at the intersection of Dunmore Road and Spencer Street will begin on Nov. 9, though signs now being installed will be covered until then.

The pilot project will evaluate traffic flow improvements for northbound motorists turning toward Allowance Ave. As well, a yield sign for traffic turning right onto northbound Kingsway Avenue will be removed.

Storm sewer work that halted through traffic on Southview Drive, between Dunmore Road and 13th Avenue is complete and the road is now open.
