Invasive plant species workshops available to Hatters on June 18-19

By Medicine Hat News on June 11, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program and Grasslands Nationalists are teaming up to host a set of workshops over the next month to help Hatters identify invasive species that may be taking over their yards.

Garden Life – An Invasive Plant ID Workshop, will take place June 18 near Jefferies Park and July 19 near Dragon Park, and instruct those in attendance on how to identify invasive species, understand the importance of removing them and, of course, learn how to eradicate them. Sessions will run 10-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on each day.

“Numerous non-native species have taken over our green spaces, gardens and back alleys. Many of them are considered invasive,” reads a release from the Interpretive Program. “Because they can be extremely harmful to our natural and agricultural environments, provincial law requires these species be eradicated or controlled. Unfortunately, most people now consider them a normal part of nature and allow them to grow freely without proper management. When left unchecked, our urban areas can act as reservoirs for these weeds which then deliver a continual invasion to native grasslands and cultivated areas where this problem is already extensive.”

Anyone interested in attending can call the Nature Line at 403-529-6225 to register. A drop-in information booth will also be available for those unable to attend a full workshop.
