The City of Medicine Hat is calling on residents to grab a garbage bag and pick up some litter for Earth Day on Friday. The parks and recreation department has highlighted specific areas of the city for cleanup and is asking anyone joining the initiative to fill out an online form showing which zone they’ll be working in. The cleanup map can be found at http://www.medicinehat.ca/earthday. “The parks and recreation department normally hosts a litter blitz event on Earth Day, but last year, with COVID restrictions, we asked residents to help clean up their neighbourhoods and parks and saw a lot of success,” parks technician Jeff Quinlan says in a city release. “We want to build on that momentum and make Earth Day a weeklong event.” Supplies like plastic gloves and bags are available at the parks office at 88 Kipling St., and at the Southeast Alberta Home and Leisure Show, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Stampede grounds. The initiative will feature various contests, allowing volunteers a chance at winning hanging baskets and seed packets, and concludes April 30 with a community barbecue at the parks office. “We want to celebrate the hard work of our community and couldn’t think of a better way than to have everyone join us in Kin Coulee after the cleanup is complete,” Quinlan said. “Earth Day is about promoting positive stewardship of the environment and encouraging actions that are beneficial to our community, for people and the wildlife … If you are able to participate, please consider disposing of any garbage you collect in your garbage collection bins.” 7
