Power customers in Saskatchewan could face a four per cent rate hike this year and another in 2023, that province’s Crown electricity provider announced last week while applying for the increase.

SaskPower says higher costs for natural gas used to make power make first general increase in four years necessary.

The change would move the rate for power from the current price of 14.23-cents per kilowatt hour for rural and urban residential customers to 14.7-cents. It would also increase the basic monthly service charge by about $3 to $26.11.

Those rates are fixed for the entire calendar year, and would cost the average residential consumer about $5 per month, according to Sask-Power’s application to the province’s Rate Review Board.

Last fall, that board approved a 9 per cent increase to natural gas commodity prices by resetting the fixed price for natural gas for home heating to $3.20 per gigajoule.
