Police have laid a charge of arson against a Medicine Hat man who they say was negligent and therefore responsible for $75,000 in damage to a cash machine inside the entrance to a downtown bank.

A release Wednesday morning states fire crews were called on Nov. 1 to the branch located at the intersection of Third Street and Sixth Avenue to extinguish a fire within the main doors. That vestibule housed the automatic teller machine.

The main entrance to the TD Canada Trust Branch at the intersection is currently closed for construction.

Police told the News they believe that improperly discarded smoking material was the cause of the blaze. On Nov. 19, the Medicine Hat Major Crimes Unit laid a charge of arson against Mawien Marac, 30.

He was held in custody while awaiting a court appearance set for Nov. 25.
