A local woman is hoping to make Halloween less stressful for Medicine Hat families with a costume swap. Miranda Christensen first organized the costume swap in 2020 in hopes of providing appropriately-sized costumes to children who might have otherwise gone without. “I thought it would be a good idea to start it because money was tight for everyone and many people had lost their jobs,” Christensen told the News. “I started asking for donations through Facebook and purchased a lot of cheap ones … It went over really well last year so I’ve done it again this year.” Christensen collects donations of new or gently used children’s Halloween costumes. She then posts pictures of the available inventory on her Facebook page, CJ’s Costume Swap/Trade, where people can message her with questions or to arrange a swap. Christensen believes it’s important for children to participate in Halloween, especially this year. She feels the holiday provides a sense of normalcy which was taken away by the pandemic. “They can get away from (reality),” said Christensen. “They can just have one fun night.” To take part in the swap or to donate a costume, connect with Christensen on Facebook. 8
