Utility prices in the Hat will remain at recent highs through October, according to floating commodity rates published Friday.

The cost of power to home and small business customers will sit at 10.58-cents per kilowatt hour – up slightly from from September – while natural gas will rise just over $4 per gigajoule.

The price of power rose above the $10 mark in July — a mark not seen locally since early 2014 – as the province saw major demand to combat a heat wave.

Month-ahead pricing from distributors is based on price forecasts, and any difference is applied to the following month’s rate.

The default utility rate in Medicine Hat is set at the average of default prices around the province.

Comparable power rates are from 10.73-cents from Epcor in Edmonton to 10.38-cents from Enmax.

Among gas distributors the spread was $3.97 from Apex Utilities and $4.08 from Direct Energy, leading to a local rate in the Hat of $4.03.

A local set rate option of 6.8-cents for power and $3.50 for natural gas.
