Grade 8 and 9 students at Alexandra Middle School are making the move to remote learning starting Friday and won’t return to in-class learning until May 10.

The Medicine Hat Public School Division posted a statement on its website saying the move to online learning is due to COVID-19.

“As a result of positive COVID-19 cases connected to AMS, more than half of the classroom teaching staff have been directed by Alberta Health Services to quarantine,” the MHPSD says. “Additionally, several staff have called in sick and are following AHS guidance with respect to isolation and testing.”

The result of absences of among staff is it becomes challenging to ensure the systems and structures in a school function properly, says the release. The division is concerned staff will be unable to maintain proper support for instruction and student safety and supervision.

Superintendent Mark Davidson has directed all Grade 8 and 9 students to start remote learning Friday and teachers will provide academic instruction through Google classroom for the duration of the at-home learning period.

Grade 7 students will remain going to class in person at AMS, but all after school and extracurricular activities will stay cancelled.
