This week Alberta Health announced that four previous COVID-19 deaths had been determined not to be related to COVID-19. “To ensure reporting is as timely as possible, a death is counted and reported in the provincial total when a person is both diagnosed with COVID-19 and/or COVID-19 is determined to be a contributing cause of death,” said Tom McMIllan assistant director communications for Alberta Health. “Each death of a COVID-19 case is assessed individually by health professionals to ensure our reporting is accurate. If there is any question, we will report the case as a COVID-19 death and then have the death certificate and file reviewed post-mortem.” McMillan says if the cause of death was unrelated to COVID, for example an individual who is a confirmed case of COVID-19 were to die in a car crash, the case would be removed from the provincial COVID death count. 5
