Medicine Hat is now on the list of communities to receive hundreds of doses of COVID vaccine.

A second shipment of the Pfizer vaccine has arrived in the province and will be provided to health-care workers and long-term-care workers.

Medicine Hat will be given 975 doses. Other communities also receiving 975 doses each include Brooks, Lethbridge, Camrose, Drumheller, Edson, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Pincher Creek and St. Paul.

Calgary and Edmonton will each receive 6,825 vaccine doses and Red Deer will receive 1,950 from this second shipment.

The government has not said when the vaccine will be dispatched to Medicine Hat and the other communities. They have also not revealed when the first vaccinations will take place here.

“AHS is working to book health-care workers in for appointments at all immunization sites. This includes offering the vaccine over the holiday period on different days depending on the zone,” said Tom McMillan, spokesperson for Alberta Health.

Alberta received its first Pfizer vaccine shipment of 3,900 doses on Dec. 14 and 3,074 health-care workers in the Edmonton and Calgary area have already been vaccinated.

The first phase of vaccine rollout focuses on respiratory therapists, intensive care physicians and staff, and long-term care and designated supportive living facility workers across Alberta.

A total of 25,350 vaccine doses have now arrived in the province.
