A winter storm led to harrowing driving conditions throughout southern Alberta and Saskatchewan on Tuesday afternoon. Heavy snow began falling in Medicine Hat at noon as a storm system blew into the region after snow fall warnings were issued late Monday. By mid-afternoon, city police closed the Trans-Canada Highway between Redcliff and First Street SW intersection until Volker Stevin road crews could sand the hills in and out of the river valley. That was reopened by 4:30 p.m., but police urged motorists to use caution throughout the city and region. The Trans-Canada was covered or partly covered by snow and slush from just east of Strathmore to Swift Current at 5 p.m. Snow-covered conditions also existed on long sections of Highway 3 between Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, all of Highway 36 south of Duchess, and the length of Highway 61 from Raymond to Etzikom. 6
