Local singer, songwriter and producer Robert Larrabee has spent his time cooped up during the COVID-19 crisis making a full-length film.
The movie, ‘That’s Bob,’ features a number of different story lines and characters, all of which are portrayed by Larrabee.
“This whole COVID-19 thing started in February and all of a sudden, all of the gigs we had for the year were cancelled,” he said. “I had to start cancelling things and sending deposits back to people – all of that meaning, I had a lot of time on my hands.
“After thinking for a bit, I wanted to do a movie on humanity.”
Larrabee says there are many funny moments in the movie, but the overall theme is on the growth of one main character.
“I don’t know exactly how I came up with the character, but I thought of this man named Bob. Bob is a far-right-leaning redneck,” he said. “He’s not the most educated guy and he has really strong feelings about everyone who doesn’t look exactly like him, sound the same or believe in the same things. He has the habit of calling people freaks.
“His wife is the opposite of him, and once she passes away we get to see Bob start his journey and his growth.”
Larrabee added that the payoff at the end of the movie is rewarding.
“There’s a lot of laughs in there, but the ending is something a lot of people can learn from,” he said. “You never know who you’re talking down to or looking down on until you get to know them.
“They may end up being a lot closer to you than you think.”
Larrabee started filming the movie in February and finished in the summer. He has sent the movie to a number of different film festivals, and has seen success internationally.
The movie was filmed at Larrabee’s house, as well as around the Hat.
“I wove news stories into the plot and some of the story lines are actually things I’ve experienced in my life,” he said. “We have a green-screen studio and I had my wife helping me with a lot of this process.
“The movie is nothing like you’ve seen before, that’s for sure.”
