Mask protocol for Alberta students returning to school

By Medicine Hat News on August 26, 2020.

The government of Alberta released new information regarding school entry last week, with details emerging on mask protocol.

Families will be given a self screening assessment tool upon registration and are expected to use it every day.

Exemptions from mask wearing will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Exemptions can be granted to people who:

– are unable to place, use or remove a mask without assistance;

– are unable to wear a non-medical mask due to mental or physical condition;

– are consuming food or drink in designated areas;

– are engaging in physical exercise;

– are providing care or assistance to a person with a disability where a non-medical face mask would hinder ability to care for the person;

– are engaging in services that required a mask to be removed;

– are in a space where physical barriers are in place.

Exemptions for a mental or physical condition will be granted by the school principal. They may required a signed letter by a doctor.

Mask storage

Students will learn from family members and staff on how to wear a mask, take one off and how to store it.

Students are reminded to wash their hands before handling their mask, handle the mask by the loops and to avoid touching their face when it is on.

If students are seated and the teacher is in a designated area away from the kids, they can take their mask off.

Food

Sharing of snacks will be allowed in classrooms if there is a designated person handing them out.

Schools with full cafeterias must follow proper food guidance as set out by the province.
