After years of running a business out of her home, Karri Montean was able to open her own store last month.

Montean opened her downtown store named Botanicals on July 17. Her boutique plant shop specializes in cacti, succulents and tropical plants.

“Things have been really good so far,” she said. “The response so far from the city and the community has been really positive.

“After a few weekends open, people are still coming out and supporting us and showing up.

“I think a lot of people are sharing our excitement, and it’s been really fun so far.”

On top of selling plants, the shop sells accessories and plant essentials.

“Everything we sell is plant-related, even something like a doormat,” said Montean. “We also have plant care items like soil and fertilizers.”

The store is located at 555 Second St. SE and allows three customers in at a time. Montean says house plants are getting quite popular.

“Over the past few years they’ve been growing in popularity,” she said. “Since COVID and isolation happened, people have been taking up house plants as a hobby.

“Things have skyrocketed in the past few months for sure.”

Montean, a mother of two, says the store has something for everyone.

“The No. 1 question we get asked is ‘What plant can’t I kill?'” she said. “We have a plant for that. We have plants that are super low maintenance, and we have ones that take more work.

“I think we have something for people of all skill levels.”
