Police suspect that equipment malfunction may have contributed to a motorcycle fatality earlier this week.

On Monday a single-vehicle collision, a motorcycle driven by a 58-year-old woman on Highway 3 near the Holsom Road intersection, at the west end of the airport, resulted in a fatality.

Insp. Brent Secondiak says he is aware of comments on social media about the identity of the deceased but Medicine Hat Police Service has decided not to release the name of the woman, which is standard practice.

Police are still investigating the circumstances that contributed to the cause of the collision.

“We believe that it could have been an equipment malfunction on the vehicle but we have to send it away for some testing to confirm that,” said Secondiak, noting it could take a week or two before the results of those tests are known.

The particular stretch of road where the accident took place is a fairly normal road without any bends that would create special challenges.

“If the vehicle is functioning properly it should be a pretty easy intersection to navigate,” said Secondiak. “It’s our belief there was an equipment malfunction but we won’t know (for sure) until the testing of the motorcycle is complete.”
