Hula from the Heart is up and running again this year with the goal of getting Hatters out of the house and doing something active.

The event is running weekly at Riverside Veterans Memorial Park, starting at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday. Participation is free and people are able to drop in and leave whenever they like.

“We inherited this project from Tabitha Davey and she used it as a way to have fun, and explore mental health and mindfulness practices,” said facilitator Dina Jubrak.”The whole idea of getting outside with other people, spending time with nature and performing movement activities is great for mental health – there’s plenty of research that proves that.

“She moved to Lethbridge a couple years ago and we’re continuing this as a Pop Up Parks initiative.”

Jubrak says this is a great way for people to fight off feelings of isolation during COVID-19.

“With everyone spending more time inside, this is the perfect time to do something like this,” she said. “We know this has been hard on a lot of people and we think Hula from the Heart can be a lot of fun for people.”

Jubrak says safety precautions will be put in place for everyone participating.

“Hula hoops are really going to naturally distance you from other people – everyone needs a bit of space,” she said. “We will have supplies to clean all of the hula hoops and people are welcome to bring their own.

“We want everyone to feel safe and to be safe.”

The events will be running every Tuesday until Aug. 11.

“The parks are beautiful, the weather has been amazing. People should come out and have some fun,” said Jubrak.

Jubrak says Flo Toys of all kind are welcome at the event and that lessons for beginners are available.

Junrak gave a special thanks to The Kommon for housing equipment and Wicked Rose Kombucha for selling hula hoops.
