The Medicine Hat College board of governors approved a seven per cent tuition hike at its meeting Tuesday evening.
A cap on tuition imposed by the previous government was lifted in the fall, allowing post-secondaries the ability to increase tuition by seven per cent for each of the next three years, after which any increase must be tied to inflation.
The UCP government also slashed the Alberta Campus Grant, which funds the province’s 26 post-secondaries, by five per cent.
Sandy Henderson, MHC’s dean of student services and registrar, said a tuition increase is the most effective way to recover these costs, and will add up to just $8 per credit for domestic students on average.
“This decision was made in consultation with students, who had opportunities to voice their questions and concerns,” Henderson said. “Their response was generally positive, as they recognize the current changing landscape and challenges within our post-secondary education system.”
He says MHC “is proud to offer over $1 million in financial awards annually” and that it is “one of the most affordable institutions in the province.”
