A drug trafficking investigation by ALERT Medicine Hat's organized crime team seized about $77,000 in methamphetamine, cocaine and cash proceeds of crime in late October. Investigators believe the drug trafficking ring was active in Medicine Hat and Brooks.

Police have dismantled a drug trafficking operation in southeastern Alberta and five people are facing charges.

A search warrant was executed on Oct. 24 at a residence in Brooks by ALERT Medicine Hat’s organized crime team assisted by MHPS and Brooks RCMP.

More than 700 grams of methamphetamine and nearly 100 grams of cocaine and close to $25,000 cash proceeds of crime was seized. The total value of the drugs and cash is estimated at more than $77,000. A rifle and a machete were also seized.

“These are significant amounts of drugs and cash to take out of the hands of criminals,” said Staff Sgt. Kelsey Fraser, ALERT Medicine Hat, in a release. “Along with the weapons seized, this is a good step toward making the communities of both Brooks and Medicine Hat safer places to live.”

“Co-operation with partners like ALERT is integral to effective policing in southeast Alberta,” added Sgt. Bruce McDonald, acting commander of the Brooks RCMP detachment.

“Cases such as this one demonstrate to criminals that they’ll still be found if they try to hide out in smaller centres.”

Police believe Kyle Potts, 33, to be at the centre of the trafficking ring. Potts is charged with seven counts each of trafficking of a controlled substance and breach of recognizance. He also faces two counts of possession of the proceeds of crime, two counts of breach of weapons prohibition, and one count each of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

David Boyer, 33, and Daniel Morrison, 35, were arrested at the same residence.

Boyer has been charged with one count each of trafficking a controlled substance, possession of proceeds of crime, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Morrison has been charged with four counts of trafficking a controlled substance and one count of possession of proceeds of crime.

Members of the Medicine Hat Police Service arrested two more people in the subsequent days.

Dallas Johnson, 27, was arrested on Oct. 25 and charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of proceeds of crime and breach of recognizance.

David Kearley was arrested on Oct. 30 and charged with charged with two counts of trafficking a controlled substance, two counts of breach of recognizance and possession of proceeds of crime.
