RCMP believe they found body of missing boater

By Medicine Hat News on October 22, 2019.

After a two-week search of Lake Newell, RCMP believe they have found the body of a missing boater.

An “underwater vehicle” equipped with a camera found the remains of a 45-year-old male at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Brooks RCMP detachment reported on Monday.

The man had parted ways with his wife at the Kinbrook Island boat launch on the evening of Oct. 5 but hadn’t been seen since he departed toward Jackfish Bay.

That night Brooks Fire department and the local RCMP detachment began a search, and the next day a wider search by multiple agencies found the man’s boat with its full complement of life vests. Shortly thereafter, authorities found clothing floating in the water near the shore.

The search involved several RCMP detachments and volunteer fire departments, Alberta Parks officers and the South Eastern Alberta Search and Rescue society as well as the Calgary Police and RCMP helicopters and a pair of civilians whose vessel made the final discovery.

The body is in custody of the medical examiner’s office at Calgary, while the investigation is ongoing.
