Cara Morrison is this year’s recipient of the $2,000 Judy Hagel Legacy Scholarship, which will go to her post-secondary education at the University of Lethbridge.

A recent graduate of Monsignor McCoy High School, Morrison is studying a bachelor’s of education alongside a bachelor’s of science.

She says her goal is to become an elementary school teacher, ideally close to home in southern Alberta.

Morrison says she was inspired to become a teacher through her aunts and uncles who taught, as well as the positive experiences she’s had with her own teachers.

“They make such a difference,” she said. “I’ve definitely seen the impact teachers can make in my own schooling.”

Morrison says she is particularly drawn to the ability to provide “caring and nurturing” to those who may not have such a positive home environment.

Her community involvement includes volunteering at the Downtown YMCA River Run and Climbing for Strong Kids, the Crescent Heights volleyball zones, the 2019 Alberta Seniors Summer Games and 2016 Alberta Summer Games, as well as working at the Medicine Hat College teacher’s convention.

She regards her volunteer work as a way to give back to the community, particularly her work at the YMCA, where she also has a job as a lifeguard.

“Volunteering literally one Saturday of the year is the least I can do for as much as they do for everybody else,” said Morrison.
