Medicine Hatters have been taking part in the Water Run for 10 years – each year the community has managed to raise more money than the last for well drilling projects in Northern Kenya.

“The support from Medicine Hat over the years has been incredible,” said organizer Dave McElhinney. “We set out a goal of $100,000 this year and we’re getting closer and closer to hitting that goal.

“It just goes to show you the generosity of Medicine Hatters, people in Alberta and even in Saskatchewan.”

People in the event ran up to 10 kilometres then enjoyed food and refreshments after the run.

McElhinney says the event raised more money than it ever has before – which will help many people in Northern Kenya.

“Every year we’ve managed to raise a little more, but this year we just blew by what we normally do,” he said. “This is just huge – people here just don’t understand what it’s not like to have water.

“We just finished our 63rd well and each well helps between 800-1,200 people.”

McElhinney says he is thankful for everyone who supported and sponsored the event.
