Police say suspicious package incident has turned out to be nothing

So far, the Medicine Hat Police Service’s investigation into an incident that caused the local courthouse’s evacuation Thursday hasn’t “revealed any suspicious activity, packages or substances,” according to a Friday news release updating the public. One individual who was on the premises was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but police say it was likely due to an unrelated ailment. An object was collected from the scene of the incident, but “preliminary examinations indicate nothing out of the ordinary,” according to the release. On Thursday, police advised the public to stay away from the vicinity of the courthouse while the early stages of the investigation, which involved the fire department’s haz-mat team, as well as the MHPS Major Crimes and Patrol Units, was underway. Although the investigation is ongoing, the Friday news release says it will be concluding soon. 6-5
