NDP planning shadow budget consult in Medicine Hat

By Medicine Hat News on August 31, 2019.

The Alberta New Democrats say a public meeting in Medicine Hat is planned for later in September to discuss the upcoming provincial budget, though a date and place are still being determined.

Opposition politicians have been calling for public consultations ahead of the late October provincial budget, and say they will hold their own meetings to prepare a shadow budget.

A release this week lists dates for seven sessions in cities around the province over the next month, but Medicine Hat is not included.

Party officials told the News on Friday that an event in the Hat is planned around the last week in September with specifics still being worked out.

The series will begin on Sept. 10 in Edmonton, then visit Grande Prairie and Red Deer the following week. A Lethbridge event would be held on Sept. 24. Fort McMurray and St. Albert will also host events in the tour that ends in Calgary on Oct. 5.

The government has said the budget, the first of the United Conservatives after the spring election, will be brought down when the legislature resumes sitting at the end of October.

The NDP release states more information and how to register is described on the party’s caucus website (albertandpcaucus.ca).

Minister visit

The Minister of Advanced Education, Demetrios Nicolaides, will visit Medicine Hat College on Thursday, Sept. 12 as part of a tour of 18 post-secondary institutions in the province.

A release on Friday states the purpose of the meetings is to discuss issues and meet with “board members, staff and students about the sector’s future. ”

Nicolaides is quoted to say “post-secondary institutions are home to some of our province’s brightest thinkers and problem-solvers. Together, we will determine the best ways to build the workforce of the future and support a stronger and growing economy.”

The tour begins Tuesday in Camrose, and also visits Lethbridge College on Sept. 13, before concluding at the end of September.
