Brain Injury Relearning Services hosting open house as part of awareness month

By Medicine Hat News on May 28, 2019.

In recognition of national brain injury awareness month the local organization, Brain Injury Relearning Services (BIRS), is hosting an open house the public is welcome to attend, especially those living with a brain injury and their families and caregivers.

It takes place Monday, June 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 856 Allowance Ave. (part of REDI Enterprises Society).

About 1.5 million Canadians live with the effects of a brain injury. It is the leading cause of death and disability for Canadians under the age of 40. The annual incidence of brain injuries is more than that of multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, HIV AIDS and breast cancer combined, according to a press release by BIRS.

The aim of BIRS is to provide support to improve the quality of life for those living with a brain injury and also for their families and caregivers.

The BIRS program was established by REDI and is contracted through Alberta Health Services to provide this region with a community cognitive program and disability services with home and community supports.

The United Way of Southeastern Alberta also provides BIRS with a grant to enable the team to provide concussion awareness and injury prevention education.
