Work to replace underground sewer and water mains is underway as several locations around the city, including a project on Fifth Avenue, S.E. in Medicine Hat, seen here on Monday, April 29, 2019.

Road and sewer construction is underway throughout Medicine Hat as several projects began this week.

The city announced that water and sewer main replacement began Monday on the 1100 block of Dominion Street, between Minto and Washington avenues.

That requires the closure of the block to traffic as well as the two adjacent intersections.

Work on Fifth Avenue SE got underway last week as crews block intersections on the Southeast Hill near Alexandra Middle School to complete the project that was begun last year.

Repairs are also commencing Wednesday on Sierra Boulevard after a sinkhole opened up earlier this month. Work was delayed until asphalt plants fired up for the spring repair season. Steel plates lay over the road but will cause the closure of two lanes into the community of Saamis.

Signal changes at the nearby intersection of Sierra Boulevard, Southridge Drive and Strachan Road on Tuesday morning in an effort to reduce congestion. Traffic between Southridge Drive and Sunrise Gate will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
