Be YOUth Centre hosts ‘Divercity’ art show

Medicine Hat’s Be YOUth Centre held an art show Friday evening as part of the Raising the Curtain Week held around the city.

The show was titled Divercity and it featured 17 pieces of art, of different forms, that were created by kids and showcased the themes of diversity.

“We’ve partnered with the Hug and Mind Place Program, the Women’s Shelter and Saamis Immigration for this,” said co-ordinator Jill Forsthye. “We’ve asked our youth to do art projects around diversity, how it impacts their lives and how they view it.

“We’ve got coffee and tea from around the world and a ‘You Matter’ photo booth – all kinds of positive activities to go along with the art show.”

Forsythe says the show is meant to get young people in the community to think about diversity and how it plays into their everyday lives.

“We want to elevate that youth voice in the community and want to allow kids to have their say on things,” she said. “We got 17 pieces submitted which is a great number for us and we hope people come in and enjoy the show tonight.

“The pieces are all really great.”

The art was judged and prizes were handed out at the end of the night for those that were picked by either the judge panel or community members who stopped by the event.

“We want the kids to be thinking about this kind of thing but also to have fun,” she said.
