Medicine Hat’s only casino is going into the new year with a new identity.
The casino is now going by Copper Coulee Casino and will be undergoing small renovations over the next couple weeks. A grand opening is slated for mid-January.
“We decided with the new ownership group it was time to freshen up and rebrand the casino,” said group spokesperson Albert Stark. “We decided that right after we bought all the shares that it would be an opportune time to rebrand.”
The group teased the new name and logo on billboards and street signs over the past few weeks as a way of generating curiosity and interest in the campaign.
“We went over a number of names and we feel like we settled on a really good fit,” said Stark. “We settled on Copper Coulee Casino and with the copper coulees in the Medicine Hat area, we felt like that made it a really nice fit.
“We considered Diamond Back Casino but eventually made the decision on Copper Coulee — we’re really happy with it.”
Part of the group’s campaign was a small fox logo and the phrase ‘What the Fox Medicine Hat?’ — a nod to a fox species that was at one point extinct in the area and now repopulating south of Medicine Hat.
“Swift foxes were indigenous to Medicine Hat some time ago and they were just reintroduced in the last six or eight months,” said Stark. “We thought the name fit perfect with the logo of the swift fox.”
Stark says the grand opening for the casino with be Jan. 18-19 and it is set to have a new food and drink menu, a couple new machines and some new furniture. Renovations will not be starting until the new year.
“We are going to renovate but it’s not going to be a big one,” he said. “We’ll be changing some small things, cleaning up a bit and changing the carpet — basically we decided that it was time for a fresh look.
“There’s going to be some nice furniture, a new menu in the lounge and we’re going to be doing a ladies night.”
Stark says the group will be moving to a new location in six years so it is not getting too comfortable at the Medicine Hat Lodge.
“For sure the move is happening,” he said. “We are being very forthright with the fact that we will be moving to a new location.
“We are moving six years from Dec. 1 of this year.”
