A Medicine Hat salon was recently recognized as one of the best in the business.

Red Velvet Hair and Body Bar was named Outstanding Salon of the Year by the 2018 Alberta Hair and Beauty Awards — a big honour, says owner Kole Dalgleish.

“We were just super honoured,” she said. “This is for salons, barbers, makeup artists from all over the province. Someone nominated us, we’re not sure who, and people voted for us to win it.

“Being recognized in a smaller community like Medicine Hat instead of a Calgary or Edmonton that has a bunch of huge salons made it even more of an honour for us to be chosen.”

Dalgleish says the salon tries to be a very welcoming place where people are comfortable attending.

“We try our best to have an open-door policy,” she said. “We believe that everything starts with our community — meaning we’re very involved with a lot of charities and do a lot of fundraisers.

“We try to let people know that they don’t have to be a client of just one stylist here but they’re a client of the whole salon and that they’re always welcome to see anyone.”

The salon opened in 2012 and Dalgleish says the group tries to make each visit as fun as possible for customers.

“We want it to feel like family for everyone who comes in,” she said. “We try and have as much fun as we can while still being very knowledgeable in what we do.”

Dalgleish thanks all staff for making this award happen.

“Our current staff is amazing,” she said. “Even staff that doesn’t work here anymore, they’ve been such a big part in building what we have here and helping us be successful.

“The team we have here is just unbelievable — they’re phenomenal.”

Dalgleish says the salon offers every service possible and also uses animal friendly products that other salons don’t offer.

“We’re an exclusive Aveda and Living Proof salon,” she said. “They’re brands that are cruelty-free — some being plant-based and others being science-based.

“We were one of the first salons in Canada to have Living Proof and the first locally to have both brands.”

Dalgleish added that a couple of other salons locally won awards as well. Couture Hair won Hair Salon of the Year South. Andrew’s Barber shop won Men’s Stylist of the Year and the Barber Salon South awards.
