Prairie Rose School Division’s updated communications plan was the main point of discussion Tuesday at its first meeting of the 2018-19 school year.

Angela Baron, PRSD’s communications co-ordinator, provided a presentation on the importance of public engagement.

“My primary goal is to provide staff, parents, students and stakeholders with relevant and up-to-date information, as well as engage them so we can actually make sure that they know what we’re doing,” said Baron.

The board’s main means of communication include newsletters, social and traditional media, as well as classroom communication apps intended mainly for parents, she said.

“Online communication does demand significant emphasis on design,” Baron added. “Gone are the days when you would just post something and hope people are just doing to read it. You’ve got to make them want to read it and you’ve got to attract them.”

Design for the purpose of broader engagement has evolved into a significant part of Baron’s role.

“I’m kind of like your designer now,” she joked.

To that effect, Baron is going to attend the Adobe Max Creativity Conference in Los Angeles from Oct. 13-17.

When engaging in social media promotion, Baron stressed the importance of using Facebook and Twitter, given their different target audiences.

While parents and students are more likely to engage with Facebook posts, tweets are important for government officials and the media, she said.

Baron said sponsored posts on Facebook are particularly useful for hiring purposes, as they reach more users than just those who already follow PRSD.
