If it felt hotter than ever Friday in Medicine Hat, don’t feel bad because, in a way, it actually was.

Reported temperatures in the late afternoon made it the hottest Aug. 10 in Medicine Hat’s recorded history, breaking a 34-year mark.

On Aug. 10, 1984, the temperature in the Hat was 39.0 C, according to Environment Canada.

By 4 p.m. Friday, its website had recorded 40 C at the Medicine Hat airport.

“The last time Medicine Hat got to 40 C was back on Aug. 24, 1969. We’re talking here about almost 50 years ago,” senior climatologist Dave Phillips told the News earlier this week.

The record temperature in Medicine Hat for the month was set Aug. 5, 1961 when the mercury climbed all the way to 41.1 C, said Phillips. The hottest temperature ever in Medicine Hat was 42.2 C on July 12, 1886.

Environment Canada’s records go back to 1883.
