Medicine Hat News A byelection date in Brooks is expected to be established Monday to fill a vacant seat on that city’s council. Michael Glynn Macdonald resigned his council seat on May 22, citing personal reasons and saying that more support for mental health programming is needed in that community. As reported in the Brooks Bulletin, Macdonald who was first elected in October, told council he attempted suicide this year after struggling with mental health issues for a number of years. He also said a lack of publicly-funded support programs in that community meant he would need to move to seek help. Mayor Barry Morishita expressed his support for Macdonald and regret over his resignation in a statement. “Councillor Macdonald has served our community admirably in many capacities over the years,” it read. “I support him as he makes this very difficult decision.” A byelection to fill the position is expected to place place within 90 days. 9
