City’s natural gas price drops to lowest level in at least 15 years

By Medicine Hat News on May 1, 2018.

The City of Medicine Hat has set its monthly utility rate and the price of natural gas has plummeted to the lowest price in at least 15 years.

The posted commodity rate for natural gas sits at $0.796 per gigajoule, down sharply from April’s rate of $2.082, and representing a drop of about 60 per cent.

The electricity rate is set at 5.489 cents per kilowatt hour, down from 6.80 cents per kilowatt hour in April.

Medicine Hat sets its local commodity rates for residential and small- to medium-sized commercial customers against an average of regulated rate option power providers and two major gas distributors in Alberta.

Gas prices elsewhere in the province $0.989 from Direct Energy and $0.603 from AltaGas.

Electricity prices ranged from a high of 5.7 cents with Direct Energy to 5.312 with Epcor Energy (outside Edmonton).
