The official launch of the Women in Construction committee, a sub-committee of the Medicine Hat Construction Association, was held Wednesday at Stark’s Plumbing.

Industry insiders discussed their thoughts on the challenges women face in the construction community, the future evolution of the industry and what partners in the construction industry can do to see everyone succeed.

A press release says the Women in Construction committee was formed with the goal of promoting a non-biased workplace in the construction industry. It works to invite both women and men to be aware of the committee and its vision; to foster relationships, partnership and membership; and to engage in opportunities presented within the industry.

The construction industry is contending with replacing an aging workforce. BuildForce estimates 36,200 retiring skilled workers will exit the Alberta construction industry over the next decade. The construction industry will be facing a skilled labour shortage and is anticipating a significant opportunity for women and youth who want to get into the trades.

Ashley Dunn, executive director of the Medicine Hat Construction Association, has more information at 403-527-9700.
