Medicine Hat News A potential major windfarm near Whitla is moving toward the next step of regulatory approval. Edmonton-based Capital Power is proposing to build a 300-megawatt windfarm in two phases on land about 50 kilometres southwest of Medicine Hat. It has said it would bid the project into a renewable energy supply auction that will conclude this year for projects put in service by the end of 2019. Separately however, Alberta Utilities Commission announced on Nov. 6 that it will begin accepting submissions before it considers regulatory approval of the project. Whitla Windfarm would be located on mostly private land directly east of the Forty Mile Coulee Reservoir, comprising 83 turbines in total on Ranges 9, 10 and 11 of Townships 7, 8 and 9. Phase one would involve situating 56 turbines capable of producing 201 megawatts, followed by 30 more turbines in phase two interspersed with existing sites. The tower height would be 105-metres (about 350 feet), with rotor diametre of 136 metres. Those wishing to learn how to become involved in the application hearing can do so at the Bow Island Legion on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. Written submissions are due on Dec. 1 and can be submitted electronically. The hearing itself will be scheduled for a later date, if needed. 11
