Members of two co-ops in southwest Saskatchewan have voted to merge.

Pioneer Co-op and Shaunavon Co-op will become a single co-operative retail entity in February after the amalgamation received overwhelming approval at meetings in late October.

It creates a new co-operative with about 23,000 members, $191 million in assets and nearly 600 employees in 30 communities.

Members of the larger Pioneer Co-op will join with the smaller entity that has locations in Eastend, Shaunavon and Bracken.

“One regional co-op for the whole southwest makes sense,” Shaunavon Co-op manager Kevin Braun said.

A vote of Pioneer members on Oct. 26 in Swift Current was 81-2 in favour. Shaunavon members endorsed the move with 80 per cent margin with 309 votes cast.
