The Hat’s fifth annual Savour the Southeast Food Festival kicks off Sunday with a Poutine Crawl to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
The festival, a partnership between Tourism Medicine Hat and the Economic Development Alliance, recognizes regional producers by having local restaurants create dishes with food grown and raised by southeast Albertan producers. It goes from Nov. 5-11.
The Poutine Crawl begins at 3 p.m. on Nov. 5, taking participants in a Prairie Sprinter Shuttle to four restaurants where they will sample the quintessentially Canadian dish.
“Culinary experience is a big part of who we are in Medicine Hat, and it’s something that locals and visitors both enjoy, and poutine is a great way to celebrate Canada’s 150th during this year’s Savour the Southeast,” said Jace Anderson, executive director of Medicine Hat Destination Marketing Organization.
“We have a remarkable selection of meats and butchers, so livestock, cattle and the like, and the greenhouses and produce are world class, frankly.
“It ends up providing a really stunning mix and opportunity for the restaurant and tourism chefs to be really creative.”
The festival also includes a craft beer tasting and touring, which starts Nov. 10 at 6 p.m.
Participants will go from Medicine Hat Brew Co. to Hells Basement to Industry Pub, and learn the differences in flavours between a pilsner and lager, methods used to create a hearty stout versus pale ale, and how beer tastes different depending on what type of glass it’s served in.
“Beer has become a significant success story throughout all of Alberta,” said Anderson, adding that the two breweries are relatively recent additions to the city. “(They helped) put Medicine Hat on the map.”
