Preschool director makes appeal to help find new home

Dawn Wolf interacts with two children at Medicine Hat Community Preschool on Tuesday. The preschool is appealing to the community to help find a new permanent home.

Medicine Hat Community Preschool is appealing to the community to help it find a new permanent home after its existing lease with the Riverview Scouts Hall on 337 Division Ave. N.E. ends in June.

“Scouts Canada doesn’t want to be in the business of owning property anymore,” says preschool director Michelle May. “They are selling the building. I have a rental agreement that will take me into the end of June, and then everything is kind of up in the air. After that I don’t have any guarantees of anything. So I would rather get this settled sooner rather than later.”

May says it has not been easy to find a suitable replacement home so far, and that’s why she decided to make a public appeal for help.

“As a daycare there are lots of rules and regulations you have to follow, so you just can’t pick any space. It has to have a set number of bathrooms. It has to have yard space … those types of things are things which usually hold us up.”

The Medicine Hat Community Preschool is a non-profit organization which currently provides care for 45 children and employs more than a dozen workers. May says she has her preferred option, but at this point she is open to other ideas from community members at large.

“Ultimately my dream is an investor would buy (the Scout Hall) and let us stay forever. So we are hoping to find that angel investor, or just some help in finding some alternate space. If we can’t find an alternate space, ultimately we won’t exist anymore.”
