People of all ages and walks of life joined together Friday morning to show remembrance for those who have served or are currently serving Canada.

The day began at the Esplanade where a packed theatre looked on as poems, songs, prayers and speeches were presented as part of the city’s Remembrance Day ceremonies.

People then gathered in the streets as veterans, current members of the military, members of the Legion, cadets and more marched down 1 St. SE to Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park. Once there, more prayers and speeches were given by members of the Legion, music was played and there was a two minute moment of silence.

At the end of the ceremonies wreathes were placed at the base of the cenotaph by multiple members of the community, business owners and political figures.

Legion member Jim Ogston, who has been running Medicine Hat’s Remembrance Day ceremonies for 11 years, says the day hits close to home for him.

“It means a lot to me,” he said. “I have a lot of family who have served in wars and have done a tour myself, so to see so many people out here showing their respect and honouring those who have served and are serving is great.”

The Legion invited anyone back to its headquarters for hotdogs and to keep the day’s events going.
