Let’s Chat: The pen is mighty

By Linda Tooth on August 14, 2024.

I spoke with someone recently who asked me about my background, and it became evident as I was going on and on about what I have done, that communications and writing are passions in my life.

I never planned on being someone invested in either. When I think back, Murder She Wrote, starring Angela Lansbury, was a favourite. I am also addicted to Bridgerton. Lady Whistledown and all she wrote in the first three seasons was mind blowing. I know those shows are fiction but how the strong female leads were portrayed is inspiring.

I should have seen it coming though, when all I do is talk and write.

Recently, during a 72-hour window, I spoke to more people than I thought possible.

I spent time talking to the Silent Generation. Those are people born between 1925-1945. Family Wave (FW) states the characteristics of this group are work ethic, determination and traditional values and culture.

Next up were the Baby Boomers. Those people are born between 1946-1965. FW believes some characteristics of this group are goal-oriented, personal fulfillment and a desire for equality.

After the Baby Boomers is my all-time favourite, Generation X. Those people, including myself, were born between 1965 and 1980. We value independence, diversity and work-life balance (there should be harmony as I have stated in the past) and are resourceful.

Next up is Millennials. They were born between 1981 and 1996. They show an eagerness to learn new things and engage in social activism.

Each group has different characteristics but the one thing that stands out for me is each group wants to be heard. That 72-hour window proved that was right.

How do we ensure each person is being heard? Relationship building and maintenance is what needs to happen. Cambridge Dictionary defines relationship as “the way in which two things are connected.”

Society cannot function well if we are not communicating with each other. This applies not only to family relationships but also to community and business relationships.

As I prepare myself for the classroom in a few weeks, I come prepared to share the importance of communication and how relationships are key to successful communication. There are many moving parts in our society and we must ensure they are all talking to each other so we can all live happy and healthy lives.

This applies to all people and all animals. We can all do better.

Have a Meowtastic Day.
