Around 250 people attended a commemorative service Nov. 12 at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

The Reformation marked the beginning of the modern era as well as the breach between Protestants and Catholics.

The service contained thanksgiving for what we share in common, repentance for the harm done to one another, and a commitment to move forward together from the perspective of unity and not from the point of view of division.

The service was based on one held in Lund, Sweden on Oct. 31, 2016, which featured Pope Francis and Bishop Munib Younan of the Lutheran World Federation serving as co-presiders.

The Medicine Hat service on Nov. 12 was a joint effort of St. Patrick’s, Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Unity Lutheran Church, and Victory Lutheran Church. The speaker was Canon Gene Packwood, retired rector of St. Barnabas Anglican Church. There were representatives in attendance from Anglican, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, and United churches as well.
